ON BROADWAY
The film is based on a hit Broadway musical that opened in 1957, directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim (his Broadway debut). The play was warmly received by critics and even called a milestone in the evolution of the American musical theater. It ran for 732 performances and then went on the road. It was nominated for five Tony Awards, losing out for Best Musical to Meredith Wilson's The Music Man. The London production ran even longer than on Broadway and there have been several stage revivals.
