The film is based on a hit Broadway musical that opened in 1957, directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim (his Broadway debut). The play was warmly received by critics and even called a milestone in the evolution of the American musical theater. It ran for 732 performances and then went on the road. It was nominated for five Tony Awards, losing out for Best Musical to Meredith Wilson's The Music Man. The London production ran even longer than on Broadway and there have been several stage revivals.

"You kids make this world lousy!"

Romeo and Juliet in the gang-ruled streets and tenements of Manhattan. Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer are not quite memorable as Maria and Tony but they are surrounded by a top-notch supporting cast, including Rita Moreno, Russ Tamblyn and George Chakiris, plus a terrific group of singers and dancers who make the most of Leonard Bernstein's wonderful music. Shakespeare would probably approve of this rendering of his most popular play.
