WALTER THOMAS HUSTON
( Apr 1883 -- Apr 1950 )

Canadian-born, Huston began his acting career on Broadway in 1924. When talking movies came along he went to Hollywood and found work in character roles. His first major role was in The Virginian, with Gary Cooper, in 1929. In 1934 he returned to Broadway to appear in the stage adaptation of the Sinclair Lewis novel Dodsworth and two years later reprised his role in the film version. He kept busy working both in films and on stage throughout the 1940s and 1950s. A few of his memorable films include: Abraham Lincoln (1930); Rain (1932); The Devil and Daniel Webster (1941); Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942); The Outlaw (1944), (the movie in which Jane Russell set the censors' hair on fire) and Duel in the Sun (1946). His last film was The Furies (1950). He was nominated four times for an Academy Award and received the Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948), directed by his son, actor and director John Huston. He was the grandfather of actress Angelica Huston and actor Danny Huston. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Title:   THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE

"Badges? We aint got no badges. We don't need no stinkin' badges."

Down on their luck in Mexico during the Great Depression, Humphrey Bogart and Tim Holt partner with veteran prospector Walter Huston to search for gold in the Sierra Madre mountains. They find a rich vein and mine more wealth then they ever imagined. But they discover Huston was right when he warned them at the outset, "Gold can change a man."

The ending features an ironic twist worthy of O. Henry. Robert Blake, as a child actor, plays a small part that is critical to the plot.

1948, Directed by John Huston Won three Oscars
