The Complete Kurosawa Collection

Producer Lou Morheim bought the rights to Seven Samurai , intending to set the movie in Mexico and cast Anthony Quinn in the lead. Somehow, Yul Brynner got the rights away from Morheim, who continued on the project, in a reduced capacity, but was denied inclusion in the credits. He and Quinn sued. Morheim won credit as associate producer but Quinn did not receive the monetary award he sought. Despite an all-star cast of gunslingers -- Brynner, Steve McQueen, Eli Wallach, James Coburn, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn and Horst Buchholz -- the film was not well regarded by critics when it was released in 1960 but it did okay at the box office. Over time, the film's standing has improved and it is the second-most-often-shown movie on TV, behind only The Wizard of Oz.

One of several excellent films by the Japanese master moviemaker, Akira Kurosawa. A 16th century village hires some unemployed professional warriors for protection against marauding bandits. This film, starring Toshiro Mifune, was the inspiration for the American old-west shoot-em-up, "The Magnificent Seven." Plenty of action but also some strong insights into human nature and universal human values, as expressed in a culture quite different from our own.

1954, Directed by Akira Kurosawa
