( Jun 1906 -- Mar 2002 )

Born in Austro-Hungary, Wilder became a screenwriter in Berlin in the late 1920s and then, being Jewish, relocated to Paris as the Nazi Party came to prominence and made his directorial debut there. In 1933 he emigrated to the U. S. and Hollywood. His reputation as a top director began in 1944 with the film noir classic, Double Indemnity, which he also co-wrote with mystery novelist Raymond Chandler. He received both the Best Screenplay and Best Director Oscars for The Lost Weekend (1950) and that same year co-wrote and directed another film noir classic, Sunset Boulevard. From the mid-50s on he made mostly comedies, most notably The Seven-Year Itch   (1955), Some Like It Hot (1959) and the satirical The Apartment, for which he won Oscars both as producer and director. During his 50-year, 60-film career he directed 14 different Oscar-nominated performances. Regarded as one of the brightest lights of Hollywood's golden age, Wilder received the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award in 1986, the Irving Thalberg Memorial Award in 1988 and, in 1993, the National Medal of Arts.

Ambitious for advancement in the corporate jungle, Jack Lemon finds it hard to say "no" to executives of the Manhattan insurance company where he works when one of them wants to borrow his apartment for an evening tryst with a lady not his wife. Then Shirley MacLaine creates complications in his life and in the plot of the movie, in a highly entertaining way. Fred MacMurray makes a convincing cad. Received the Oscar for "Best Picture" and four other Oscars.
