"The ides of march are come."
           "Ay, Caesar, but not gone."

A superior adaptation of Shakespeare's drama about political power and personal honor in ancient Rome. The outstanding cast includes James Mason as Brutus, John Gielgud as Cassius and Marlon Brando as Mark Antony. The supporting cast features Deborah Kerr, Greer Garson, Edmond O'Brien and several other distinguished actors. Brutus is recruited by a group of disaffected senators, led by Cassius, to join a plot to assassinate Caesar in the capitol. Convinced that Caesar will sooner or later assume absolute power, ending the Republic, Brutus becomes one of them. In the event, the death of Caesar ignites a civil war that destroys the Republic, as Caesar's nephew Octavian becomes Caesar Augustus, the first Roman emperor. This production earned the Oscar for art direction and set direction. Marlon Brando's Antony betrays no hint of Vito Corleone.

1953, Directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz.
