Signed by Andrew Lloyd Webber

(Baron Lloyd-Webber)

Born in March 1948, Lloyd-Webber has had an epic career as composer and impressario in musical theater, both in his native Britain and in the U. S. Several of his musicals have run for more than a decade, both in London's West End and on Broadway. His output includes thirteen stage musicals, two film scores, a Latin Requieum Mass and other compositions. He was knighted in 1992 and then elevated to the Peerage. Lloyd-Webber has received seven Tony Awards, three Grammy Awards, one Academy Award, one Golden Globe Award and he was a Kennedy Center honoree in 2006. Many of his songs have had long-term popularity independently of the muscial productions in which they were first performed. His company, the Really Useful Group, is one of the largest theater operators in London.

"Prove to me that you're no fool.
Walk across my swimming pool."

A highly creative, if not universally applauded, production that tends to divide audiences between those who think it is great and those who think it's awful and disrespectful to religion. Many of the oft- heard criticisms indicate there are some people who "just don't get it." For example, the complaint that it portrays Jesus as just an ordinary man, not the son of God, is far wide of the mark. The ending of the film proves otherwise. It was designed to make people think, and not everyone is willing to do so.

Ted Neely is a bit too lightweight for the title role but the surrounding production is strong enough to overcome that. Joshua Mostel is a somewhat different kind of Herod, but makes the same point as the more conventional portrayal. Caifus and the other priests are brilliantly staged when they warn, "He is dangerous!" The Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber music can best be described as majestic.

1973, Directed by Norman Jewison
