SIR ARTHUR CHARLES CLARKE (Dec 1917 -- Mar 2108)

Arthur C. Clarke served in the Royal Air Force from 1941 to 1946 as a radar technician and instructor. Early on, he developed a highly optimistic view of science and technology and how they might create a better future for humankind. In 1945 he proposed a satellite communications system, for which he received a Franklin Institute award. From 1947 to 1950, and again in 1953, he was Chairman of the British Interplanetary Society. In 1956 he emigrated to Sri Lanka, where he lived the remainder of his life, to pursue his interst in Scuba diving. He later discovered the underwater ruins of the ancient Koneswaram Temple at Trincomalee. Early in his life he was fascinated by the paranormal but after investigating many claims of paranormal phenomena over the years, he became highly skeptical. His British television series, Mysterious World, explored the claims and questions regarding paranormal experience. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1998.

TITLE:   2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY

"I'm sorry Dave.
       I'm afraid I can't do that."

A monumental production of Arthur C. Clarke's sci-fi novel, "The Sentinel." Alien encounters are depicted from the time of pre-humans up to the present.

When a strange artifact is discovered on the moon, it begins beaming a signal toward Jupiter. Kier Dullea and Gary Lockwood are astronauts chosen for the first manned mission to Jupiter. HAL, the advanced computer system that operates their spacecraft, is virtually another co-star. His sinister voice is provided by Douglas Rain. The special effects of "Jupiter and Beyond" are eye- and mind-bending. The film also makes the classic composition "Thus Spake Zarathustra" by Richard Strauss a Top-40 hit.

1968, Directed by Stanley Kubrick
